Visa purchases BioCatch for $2.4 billion to boost behavioral biometrics

Visa announced a $2.4 billion cash acquisition of BioCatch, a specialist in behavioral biometrics. The deal, priced at an 85 % premium over BioCatch’s 2024 valuation, is intended to add an authentication layer that can verify both human users and AI agents in online commerce. BioCatch’s technology analyzes thousands of data points per session—such as typing cadence, touchscreen gestures, mouse movements and device handling—to detect identity theft, account takeovers and other fraud before a payment occurs. Visa plans to integrate this capability with its existing fraud‑management suite, moving beyond transaction‑monitoring to pre‑payment risk mitigation.

The acquisition follows a broader industry trend of payment networks expanding into cybersecurity. Competitors such as Mastercard have recently bought stable‑coin infrastructure firms, while LexisNexis acquired a rival behavioral‑biometrics vendor, BehavioSec, in 2022. Visa’s President of Value‑Added Services, Andrew Torre, said the purchase will help clients stop fraud that costs the global economy over $1 trillion annually. By securing BioCatch, Visa aims to become a key provider of the “trust layer” needed for emerging agent‑driven commerce.
