Visakhapatnam OSAT Facility Inaugurated, Boosting India's Chip Production
Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually laid the foundation stone for Andhra Pradesh's first outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) plant in Visakhapatnam. The facility, built by ASIP Technologies in partnership with South Korea's APACT Co., is approved under the India Semiconductor Mission and represents South India's inaugural semiconductor manufacturing complex.
The project involves an initial investment of over ₹460 crore, with a total planned outlay of about ₹2.5 billion (≈₹2,388 crore) across two phases. It will have an annual production capacity of roughly 96 million chips and will initially use wire‑bond and flip‑chip BGA packaging, later expanding to advanced 2.5D and 3D packaging within two to three years. The plant is expected to create more than 1,000 direct high‑skilled jobs and about 1,600 indirect jobs, supporting sectors such as artificial intelligence, high‑performance computing, data centres and high‑speed communications for both domestic demand and export markets.
The Union Cabinet has recently approved additional semiconductor projects, bringing the total number of ISM‑approved facilities to 12 across six Indian states with cumulative investments of about ₹1.64 lakh crore, underscoring the government's push to strengthen the national chip ecosystem.
