Visayas Power Grid Eyes Capacity Boost and New Storage Projects

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) reported that the Visayas region recorded a peak demand of 2,779.37 MW on May 14, 2026 and continues to face supply constraints, importing 200 MW from Luzon and 450 MW from Mindanao. NGCP highlighted infrastructure upgrades such as the Cebu–Bohol 230‑kV interconnection and substation improvements in Ubay and Corella to increase transmission capacity.

The Department of Energy (DOE) said the re‑activation of Units 1 and 2 of Therma Visayas Inc. (TVI) remains on schedule for August and announced plans for roughly 250 MW of battery energy storage systems (BESS) to improve grid reliability. DOE officials indicated they will monitor the situation and consider a second round of capacity augmentation if needed.
