Visby Battle: Researchers identify weapon causing square bone injuries
Researchers studying the 1361 Battle of Visby have identified a lethal weapon responsible for unique square-shaped injuries found on human remains. The battle involved Danish forces invading the Swedish island of Gotland.
A research team led by biological anthropologist Patrick Randolph Quinney from Uppsala University analyzed seven skulls using advanced technology, including structured light scanning and microphotogrammetry. To simulate historical combat conditions, the team created high-resolution 3D models of the injuries and tested them using soft tissue substitutes and ballistic gelatin to replicate human muscle and skin under armor.
