Viseu implements free public transport for residents
The municipality of Viseu has introduced free public transportation for its residents to combat rising fuel costs. Since the beginning of September, the local government has covered the cost of transit subscriptions to encourage citizens to reduce car usage.
The initiative, which includes the MUV networks, certain STUV lines, and MOBI Viseu Dão Lafões, has seen a rapid uptake. In less than two weeks, approximately 3,500 new free passes were issued, representing a fourfold increase in demand compared to usual levels.
To qualify for the ‘Passe Residente Viseu’, individuals must be residents of the municipality and provide proof of domicile. While the municipality fully funds the measure, there is an initial 5 euro fee for the issuance of the card. The program complements existing national measures that provide free transit for youths up to 23 years of age.
