Viseu implements free public transportation for all residents
The municipality of Viseu has approved a policy to provide free public transportation for all residents. This measure, supported by President João Azevedo, aims to improve quality of life by making mobility accessible regardless of age or income. The initiative is intended to reduce living costs for families, decrease traffic congestion, and lower environmental emissions by encouraging citizens to switch from private vehicles to buses.
In a broader national context, the trend of subsidizing or providing free public transport has gained traction among Portuguese politicians. Previous efforts include the Tariff Reduction Support Program (PART), which integrated into the Incentiva+TP package, aimed at lowering monthly pass costs in the Lisbon and Porto Metropolitan Areas. However, critics argue that price reductions alone are insufficient if the physical availability and coverage of bus networks remain inadequate in many regions.
