Vision care initiatives launched amid rising childhood myopia rates
Recent data from the Ministry of Health and Welfare indicates a rising myopia crisis among children, with approximately 58% of 5-year-olds in seven counties showing signs of myopia or pre-myopia. In response, University Eye Center, University Optical, and Essilor have launched the ‘VISION CARE All-Age Vision Care’ initiative. This program focuses on children aged 6 to 18, integrating medical assessments, precise lens fitting, and digital tracking to manage eye health and axial length development.
Medical professionals emphasize that eye care must move beyond simple correction to proactive management. Experts suggest that for modern users facing digital eye strain, following the ‘20-20-20 rule’—looking 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes—is essential. Additional recommendations include maintaining proper viewing distances, ensuring adequate lighting, consuming nutrients like lutein and Omega-3, and scheduling regular eye examinations to monitor long-term vision health.
