Viðskiptaráð proposes 60 measures to cut state spending
The Icelandic Chamber of Commerce (Viðskiptaráð) has proposed 60 measures aimed at achieving a permanent reduction in government spending by approximately 100 billion ISK. The proposals are categorized into six distinct groups.
Key recommendations include the sale of state-owned assets to reduce interest expenses and improve tax revenue through more efficient private management. The Chamber also suggested reforms to public sector employment, such as aligning holiday entitlements—noting that public employees currently receive 30 days compared to 24 days in the private sector—and harmonizing sick leave benefits.
