Vistula Spit canal sees minimal cargo traffic despite high yacht usage

Data from the Maritime Office in Gdynia reveals that the Vistula Spit canal has seen minimal commercial cargo activity since its opening. By the end of August 2026, only three commercial vessels carrying cargo had utilized the waterway.

Of the 1,249 total vessels that passed through the canal by late August 2026, the vast majority—1,024 units—were recreational yachts and motorboats. Other notable traffic included 106 commercial vessels without cargo, primarily dredging barges working on the waterway to Elbląg, and 105 state vessels used by services such as the police and Border Guard.

Traffic remains highly seasonal, peaking in summer months like June and August, while nearly ceasing during the winter when the Vistula Lagoon freezes. While the canal was intended to boost the economic significance of the Elbląg port, current usage is dominated by leisure boating and construction-related vessels rather than industrial shipping.
