Visual AI and memory: The impact of screenshots and new search tools

Research from Binghamton University has identified a phenomenon known as the ‘photo-taking impairment effect.’ The study suggests that the act of taking a screenshot or photo to save information can actually hinder memory retention. Participants in the study showed poorer recall of visual content they had screenshotted compared to content they simply viewed. Researchers propose three potential causes: divided attention during the act of capturing, cognitive offloading where the brain relies on the device rather than active memory, and attentional disengagement from the original content.

In the realm of practical application, HarmonyOS 7 is introducing new visual AI capabilities to address digital file management. The Core Vision Kit includes a ‘text-to-image’ search feature, allowing users to find images using semantic descriptions like ‘meeting whiteboard’ rather than filenames. Additionally, it offers image super-resolution to enhance low-quality or compressed photos. These tools aim to bridge the gap between how humans remember scenes and how traditional file systems organize data.
