Vitalik Buterin proposes EIP-8288 to optimize Ethereum cryptography
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has expressed support for EIP-8288, a proposal designed to enhance the network's ability to handle complex cryptography without requiring constant protocol upgrades. The proposal suggests using STARK proofs to aggregate multiple cryptographic signatures before they are verified by the network. This approach allows heavy computational work to occur outside the main execution process, with users generating proofs locally and submitting them through an aggregation mechanism.
A primary benefit of EIP-8288 is its potential to support quantum-resistant signatures. Currently, verifying such signatures can be extremely costly, potentially requiring 10 million gas; however, Buterin estimates that this new method could reduce costs to tens of thousands of gas, a reduction of over 99%. By using recursive STARK proofs, the network can verify a single aggregated proof rather than processing every individual signature, which also helps manage data weight on the blockchain.
Despite the potential benefits, the proposal faces technical scrutiny. Starkware CEO Eli Ben-Sasson raised concerns regarding the mathematical structure of lattice-based cryptography, suggesting it might be vulnerable to AI-driven attacks and requires further years of validation. EIP-8288 remains a draft and requires further implementation, consensus, and a coordinated network update before it can be deployed on the Ethereum mainnet.
