Vitamin C and steam inhalation for cold symptoms
As temperatures drop, common autumn ailments like sore throats and nasal congestion increase. Regarding vitamin C, research indicates it does not prevent the common cold or allow the body to store excess amounts, as the kidneys eliminate surplus. However, it remains essential for immune system function, collagen formation, iron absorption, and reducing oxidative stress. High concentrations are found in seasonal foods such as kiwi, citrus fruits, peppers, and broccoli.
Regarding steam inhalation (fumenti) for nasal congestion, a Cochrane scientific review of six clinical studies found no convincing evidence that inhaling warm, humidified air provides significant benefits for cold symptoms or reduces viral presence. While individuals may experience temporary relief, the practice does not appear to reduce inflammation or accelerate healing.
