Vitamin C linked to brain health in elderly study
A study published in PLOS One involving over 2,000 Japanese seniors suggests a link between Vitamin C levels and brain health in aging. Researchers found that individuals with lower blood plasma Vitamin C levels exhibited less gray matter volume and weaker connectivity within the Default Mode Network (DMN), a brain network responsible for functions such as attention and autobiographical memory.
The correlation remained significant after adjusting for variables including age, gender, education, physical activity, smoking, alcohol consumption, diabetes, blood pressure, and blood lipids. However, researchers noted that because the study was cross-sectional, it cannot prove that Vitamin C consumption directly prevents cognitive decline or maintains brain volume. They emphasized the importance of a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables over high-dose supplementation.
