Vitamin D and its relationship with thyroid health and dietary sources
Vitamin D plays a significant role in bone health, muscle function, and immune system regulation. Recent scientific interest has focused on its relationship with autoimmune thyroid diseases, such as Hashimoto's thyroiditis and Graves' disease. While studies suggest that low levels of Vitamin D may be linked to these conditions, researchers emphasize that Vitamin D should not be viewed as a standalone cure for autoimmune thyroid pathologies. Maintaining thyroid health requires a holistic approach, including adequate intake of iodine and selenium, a balanced diet, and medical supervision.
Since the body synthesizes Vitamin D through sun exposure—which can be limited by season, skin tone, or sunscreen use—dietary sources are important. While eggs are a well-known source, other foods provide higher concentrations. Cod liver oil is one of the richest sources, providing approximately 170% of the daily value per tablespoon. Pistachios can cover over 80% of daily needs per serving, and salmon provides about 71% per 85g serving. For those on plant-based diets, mushrooms exposed to UV light serve as a useful option.
