Vitamin D and magnesium roles in bone and nerve metabolism
Vitamin D and magnesium play essential roles in various bodily functions, particularly regarding bone, muscle, and nerve metabolism. Vitamin D, a group of solid vitamins known as calciferols, is primarily produced by the skin through exposure to sunlight, accounting for 80 to 90 percent of the body's supply. The remaining portion is obtained through diet via foods such as fatty fish, eggs, and liver oil. According to the Robert Koch Institute, Vitamin D is crucial for bone mineralization as it promotes the absorption of calcium and phosphate from the intestines.
Beyond bone health, Vitamin D is involved in protein synthesis and the regulation of numerous genes. A deficiency may lead to depressive moods. Magnesium, which the body cannot produce on its own, must be consumed through food and is vital for muscle, nerve, and bone metabolism.
