Vitamin D deficiency and abdominal obesity increase death risk

A study conducted by researchers from University College London and the Federal University of Sao Carlos has identified a significant health risk for adults over 50: the combination of abdominal obesity and Vitamin D deficiency.

Analyzing data from 5,520 participants in the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA) over a six-year period, researchers found that individuals with both high visceral fat and low Vitamin D levels face a 123% increased risk of premature death. For comparison, Vitamin D deficiency alone was associated with a 91% increased risk, while abdominal obesity (defined as a waist circumference over 102 cm for men and 88 cm for women) independently increased the risk by 47%.

Scientists suggest a biological mechanism for this synergy: because Vitamin D is fat-soluble, excess adipose tissue can sequester the vitamin, trapping it within fat cells and preventing it from reaching the bloodstream and other vital organs where it is needed.
