Vitamin D deficiency and its impact on bone health
Health experts warn that insufficient sunlight exposure can lead to significant bone health issues by reducing the body's production of Vitamin D. Since over 90% of the body's Vitamin D requirement is typically met through natural sunlight, a lack of UV exposure—often exacerbated during winter months—can impair the intestines' ability to absorb calcium.
Low Vitamin D levels are linked to decreased bone mass, osteoporosis, and an increased risk of fractures. In adults, severe deficiency can lead to osteomalacia, a condition where bones become soft and weak, causing persistent pain. In children, this deficiency manifests as rickets, which can seriously impact skeletal development.
Conversely, experts caution against the excessive use of supplements. Overconsumption of Vitamin D can cause calcium to deposit in the kidneys, leading to stones, or accumulate in soft tissues such as the heart, lungs, and blood vessels. To maintain healthy levels, doctors recommend consuming foods rich in Vitamin D, such as egg yolks and fatty fish like salmon and mackerel, or fortified products like milk and orange juice.
