Vitamin D deficiency and its links to hair loss and health
Vitamin D deficiency is increasingly recognized in medicine and trichology for its potential link to hair loss. While the body can synthesize vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) through UVB exposure from sunlight, effective synthesis is limited in certain regions during autumn and spring. Dietary sources are also limited, primarily consisting of fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, and sardines.
Research indicates that magnesium plays a critical role in the optimal absorption and function of vitamin D. However, experts warn against excessive supplementation; high doses of magnesium can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, irregular heartbeat, and low blood pressure. Similarly, exceeding recommended vitamin D levels (typically 800-2000 IU per day for adults) may lead to kidney stones, loss of appetite, and neuropsychiatric disturbances.
Deficiencies in vitamin D can result in osteomalacia, characterized by bone deformation, joint pain, and, in extreme cases, seizures. Medical professionals recommend laboratory testing to determine specific needs before beginning supplementation.
