Vitamin D deficiency and supplementation guidelines
Vitamin D is an essential nutrient that functions as both a vitamin and a hormone, playing a critical role in immune function, muscle strength, and bone health. While the body can produce Vitamin D through exposure to UV radiation from sunlight, insufficient sunlight—particularly during the darker months from September to May in regions like Germany—often necessitates supplementation.
According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), a deficiency is identified when Vitamin D is lacking over a long period and clinical symptoms appear. Research indicates that approximately 30.2 percent of adults aged 18 to 79 have suboptimal levels, defined by a serum level below 12 ng/ml. Severe deficiency (below 10 ng/ml) can lead to serious conditions such as rickets in children, osteomalacia, or osteoporosis.
To address deficiencies, supplementation is often used. A general guideline suggests that approximately 143 IU per day can increase blood levels by 1 ng/ml. The time required to correct a deficiency depends on the severity of the shortage and the individual's body weight. Medical consultation is recommended to determine appropriate dosages, as levels exceeding 50 ng/ml may indicate potential oversupply.
