Vitamin D deficiency risks and causes
Vitamin D deficiency is a common issue driven by several physiological and environmental factors. While the body synthesizes the vitamin through skin exposure to sunlight, several obstacles can prevent sufficient production.
In winter, reduced sunlight hours, colder temperatures leading to more time indoors, and wearing more clothing to cover the skin significantly lower natural synthesis. Beyond seasonal changes, other factors contributing to deficiency include poor diet, aging, pregnancy, obesity, and physical barriers like window glass that filter out necessary UVB rays.
Because vitamin D is essential for calcium absorption, bone health, immune system function, and nervous system regulation, a deficit can lead to persistent fatigue, muscle or bone pain, increased respiratory infections, and mood changes. Experts suggest that because diet provides very little vitamin D, oral supplementation is often recommended for much of the population to maintain healthy levels.
