Vitamin D importance for bone health and immune function

Vitamin D plays a critical role in human health, particularly regarding bone development, immune system function, and muscle and neurological health. It facilitates the absorption of calcium and phosphorus, which is essential for preventing bone deformities, rickets in children, and osteoporosis in adults.

Medical experts note that determining optimal levels can be complex due to varying international standards. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) suggests that a 25(OH)D serum value between 30 and 50 ng/ml is optimal. Levels below 30 ng/ml are generally associated with deficiency and increased risks of bone diseases.

For infants and children, Vitamin D is often recommended as a supplement from the earliest days of life to support growth, motor skills, and cognitive development. Because the body may struggle to produce sufficient Vitamin D during winter months, supplementation is a common medical recommendation.
