Vitamin D Linked to Lower Tau Protein Levels in 16‑Year Alzheimer Study
A 16‑year longitudinal investigation of 793 participants from the Framingham Heart Study found that higher blood levels of vitamin D measured around age 39 were associated with significantly lower concentrations of toxic tau proteins later in life. The participants, none of whom had dementia at baseline, underwent PET scans about 16 years after the initial blood draw, revealing the reduced tau accumulation, while no correlation was observed with beta‑amyloid plaques.
The study, published in Neurology Open Access, suggests that adequate mid‑life vitamin D status may influence early brain changes linked to Alzheimer’s disease, opening a potential window for preventive strategies. Researchers emphasize that the findings show an association, not causation, and call for further work to determine whether vitamin D supplementation could mitigate Alzheimer risk.
