Vitamin D3 and DHA combination linked to improved cognitive function
A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial involving 355 adults aged 65 and over with mild cognitive impairment has found that combining vitamin D3 and DHA may improve cognitive function.
Participants received either 800 IU of vitamin D3, 1 gram of DHA, a combination of both, or a placebo daily for 12 months. The study reported that while vitamin D3 or DHA alone showed improvements compared to the placebo, the combination of both nutrients produced greater cognitive improvements. Additionally, the combined treatment resulted in larger reductions in blood markers associated with inflammation and pyroptosis, a process of inflammatory cell death linked to cognitive decline.
