Vitamin K shown to prevent ferroptosis, opening new therapy avenues

Researchers at Helmholtz Munich have identified vitamin K as a powerful lipid‑soluble antioxidant that actively blocks ferroptosis, a form of cell death linked to Alzheimer’s disease, acute organ injury and other degenerative conditions. In laboratory studies both vitamin K1 and K2 halted the oxidative damage of cell membranes, and the team discovered that the protein FSP1 converts vitamin K into its active hydroquinone form, operating independently of the anticoagulant warfarin.

The findings suggest a novel mechanism for protecting cells and could pave the way for future treatments targeting ferroptosis‑related diseases.

The study, reported on 20 May 2026, emphasizes vitamin K’s potential beyond its well‑known role in blood clotting and highlights the long‑sought identity of the enzyme that activates the vitamin’s protective function.
