Vitamin K Supplements and B12 Deficiency Linked to Brain Health Risks

Vitamin K is essential for blood clotting, bone health and cardiovascular function. For people who do not obtain enough from their diet, supplements such as Vitamin K1 10 mg tablets are marketed as a way to maintain adequate levels and prevent deficiency‑related health problems.

A recent study of 231 healthy older adults published in the Annals of Neurology found that lower biologically active levels of vitamin B12 were associated with slower visual‑processing speed, reduced electrical brain activity and increased white‑matter lesions on MRI—markers linked to dementia. The participants’ average B12 level was well above the clinical deficiency threshold, yet those with relatively lower active B12 performed worse, prompting researchers to suggest a reassessment of current dietary recommendations, which advise most adults to consume 2.4 µg of B12 daily.
