Viterbo Council approves covering of 'Casa del Balilla' inscription

The Viterbo Provincial Council has approved a motion to cover the ‘Casa del Balilla’ inscription located on the facade of the Mariano Buratti Classical Lyceum. The decision aims to preserve the historical writing without allowing it to remain visible, preventing it from serving as a celebratory symbol of a condemned culture.

The motion was supported by the Tuscia Democratica and Tuscia Centristi Azzurri Civici groups. It faced opposition from the Casa dei Comuni group, consisting of Fratelli d'Italia and the Rocca list, who raised concerns regarding the council's jurisdiction and the lack of an official restoration report.

Debate surrounding the inscription highlighted the tension between historical preservation and political symbolism. Proponents argued for protecting the text beneath new paint to maintain historical evidence, while critics questioned the methodology and the necessity of the intervention.
