Viterbo prison crisis prompts calls for reforms in Italy

Recent incidents at the Nicandro Izzo prison in Viterbo – a suicide, a death following a fight and a fire that poisoned inmates and guards – have revived criticism of Italy’s penitentiary system. The left‑wing party Rifondazione Comunista and the FP Cgil union warned that chronic overcrowding, severe staff shortages and inadequate facilities are pushing the system toward collapse. They demand an emergency hiring plan, reduction of inmate numbers and increased health and psychological support for detainees and staff.

The provincial Arci committee echoed these concerns, linking the crisis to legislative choices that favour mass incarceration over social investment. It called for an immediate shift toward alternative measures, expanded welfare services inside and outside prisons, and stronger health and social assistance to curb the “hyper‑carceration” trend.
