Viterbo Prison Fire Injures 23, Sparks Overcrowding Debate
A fire erupted in the special precautionary wing of the Nicandro Izzo prison (Mammagialla) in Viterbo on the night of 25‑26 July 2026. The blaze, suspected to be arson and possibly started by mattresses, filled the wing and infirmary with dense smoke. Seventeen detainees and six members of the prison police were intoxicated; one detainee was taken to hospital in red code, six in yellow code, while ten received on‑site care.
Emergency services deployed the fire brigade, Ares 118’s maxiemergency unit, two ambulances and four advanced ambulances, and set up a medical post in Orte. Hospitals in the province were placed on pre‑alert and a staff‑exchange of ambulances was organised between the prison and Santa Rosa hospital.
Later that night a 29‑year‑old detainee, Abdelkabir Talha, was found dead in his cell, apparently by suicide. Talha had been one of ten detainees under investigation for the July 16 death of Mohamed Chaanoun.
Provincial president Alessandro Romoli and Lazio region president Francesco Rocca expressed solidarity with staff and inmates and called for immediate action to address chronic overcrowding and staffing shortages in Italy’s penitentiary system.
