Viterbo prison fire sparks safety concerns and union protests

A fire broke out in the isolation ward of the Nicandro Izzo prison in Viterbo, located in the Mammagialla area, on the evening of September 19. Firefighters and medical personnel responded to the scene, but no injuries or cases of intoxication were reported.

This incident marks the second fire in the prison's isolation ward in recent months, following a similar event in July that caused intoxication among 23 inmates and staff. Prison police unions have condemned the event, describing the working conditions as 'unsustainable' due to chronic critical issues.

The facility is currently facing significant operational challenges, including severe overcrowding with 624 inmates in a facility designed for 440. Additionally, the prison is understaffed, operating with 292 officers despite a required headcount of 350. Regional justice authorities have announced extraordinary inspections to investigate safety protocols, electrical systems, and structural maintenance.
