Viticulture research examines climate impact on Iberian wines
Recent scientific research in the Iberian Peninsula is examining how environmental factors and microorganisms influence wine quality.
A study published in the journal OENO One analyzed six traditional Portuguese grape varieties—three white (Encruzado, Malvasia Fina, and Terrantez) and three red (Coração de Galo, Jaen, and Touriga Nacional)—cultivated in the Dão region. The research compared the 2023 and 2024 growing seasons to determine how much aromatic potential and volatile profiles are dictated by grape variety versus annual climatic variations, such as temperature and precipitation.
In Spain, the Innotrack study, conducted by the Mas Alta winery and the Vitec technology center in Falset, has identified specific wild yeasts in the Priorat region that may help mitigate the effects of climate change. These indigenous yeasts, isolated from vineyards, are being used in micro-vinifications to maintain wine typicity and ensure proper alcoholic fermentation. Some strains have shown potential to reduce volatile acidity while enhancing aromatic complexity and sensory profiles.
