Ceuta judicial system requests reinforcements amid migration crisis

The Spanish city of Ceuta is facing a significant humanitarian and judicial crisis following a massive influx of migrants between July 30 and 31. The Consejo General del Poder Judicial (CGPJ) has formally requested urgent judicial reinforcements to manage the extraordinary workload. This includes the addition of two magistrates, experienced staff, and interpreters to handle the surge in legal proceedings.

Data from the judiciary indicates that between July 30 and August 5, courts processed 96 proceedings related to deaths and 23 involving detainees. Between August 5 and August 11, 72 police reports involving detainees or summons were received. The CGPJ specifically emphasized the need for reinforcement in courts handling sexual offenses and violence against women due to a spike in related cases.

On the humanitarian front, the Spanish government has announced the provision of approximately 1,500 temporary shelter places and the installation of emergency tents to assist migrants. Meanwhile, the European Commission has stated that EU law allows for the return of illegal migrants, including unaccompanied minors, to Morocco. Local authorities are also investigating reports of irregular occupation of public housing in the city.
