Vitoria housing dispute highlights social aid controversy

A legal dispute in Vitoria has sparked debate regarding the management of social welfare in the Basque Country. A family of eight, consisting of a couple and six children, was recently evicted from a property they had occupied for several years despite the owner's attempts to reclaim the home for personal use since 2019.

According to municipal reports, the family received 2,454.18 euros per month through seven different types of public assistance, including the Minimum Vital Income, RGI, and various child and housing subsidies. While receiving these funds, the property owner and his family were forced to live in a single room within the house while awaiting a judicial resolution.

Municipal social services indicated that the family had been aware of the owner's intent to not renew the lease since October 2019. Furthermore, reports state that the family declined certain resources, including an offer for emergency provisional housing, and refused to sign official documentation regarding offered assistance. The case has raised questions about the balance between social solidarity and the accountability of aid recipients.
