São Paulo Military Police investigate surge in body camera misuse
The São Paulo Military Police (PM-SP) has seen a 208% increase in disciplinary investigations regarding the misuse of body cameras during the first half of 2026. A report from the Public Security Secretariat (SSP) finalized on August 20 revealed that 928 procedures were opened to investigate various infractions.
Identified misconduct includes unnecessary firearm discharges, reckless vehicle operation, providing false information, and improper uniform usage. Investigations also highlighted technical issues and deliberate interference with the equipment, such as obstructing lenses, failing to activate devices, or allowing batteries to run out.
The report notes that these issues surfaced following the adoption of Motorola cameras in May 2025, which require manual activation, unlike the previous Axon models that recorded continuously. The administration under Governor Tarcísio de Freitas stated that investigations may expand if further evidence of regulatory violations is found.
