Vittoria, Italy's Daniele Manin Square violent brawl prompts army request
On 29 July 2026 a violent confrontation involving more than 50 participants broke out in Daniele Manin Square (formerly Piazza Senia) in Vittoria, Sicily. The clash forced worshippers inside the Sacro Cuore di Gesù church to take shelter and left the town centre in turmoil.
Mayor Francesco Aiello described the incident as "intolerable" and demanded immediate state intervention, including the possible deployment of the Italian Army and reinforcement of local police forces. Simultaneously, Forza Italia local secretary Andrea La Rosa sent a formal letter to the prefect of Ragusa urging an emergency security protocol, stronger police presence, improved lighting and the extraordinary use of army units, citing similar actions taken in Catania and Palermo.
