Frontex representatives interrogated in Cutro shipwreck probe

Italian prosecutors have interrogated three Italian representatives from Frontex regarding the February 2023 shipwreck in Cutro. The interrogations, conducted by Crotone substitute prosecutor Matteo Staccini, focused on the decision-making processes in the Frontex operational room in Warsaw on the night of the tragedy.

The officials questioned include Giovanni Ligas, a team leader, Paolo Magistri, a Coast Guard SAR expert, and Walter Vincenzo Pascalicchio, a Guardia di Finanza law enforcement expert. None of the individuals are currently under investigation.

The inquiry aims to clarify how the vessel, the Summer Love, was classified and to examine the communication between the aircraft crew and the Frontex team leader during the initial sighting. The proceedings seek to address contradictions in how the event was categorized during the hours preceding the shipwreck.
