Vittorio Macchi, long-serving Varese partisan, passes away
Vittorio Macchi, recognized as the longest-living partisan in Varese, has passed away following a sudden hospitalization. Born in 1927, Macchi joined the Garibaldi Brigade as a staffetta at the age of 17, transporting clandestine messages and print materials during the Italian Resistance.
Rocco Cordì, president of the Anpi ‘Claudio’ Macchi section, noted that Macchi had remained lucid in his recent recollections of his youth and his choice to fight against Nazi occupation and the Salò Republic. Macchi had survived the April 1944 bombings that claimed the lives of his grandmother and sister.
Funeral services are scheduled for Friday, August 14, in Varese.
