Vittorio Zito calls for extension of registration deadline for non-resident voters
Vittorio Zito, the mayor of Roccella Ionica, has issued a national appeal to extend the December 31 deadline for non-resident voters to register for upcoming elections. Zito argues that the current legislative framework for students and workers living away from their registered municipalities is overly bureaucratic and complex.
In letters addressed to the Conference of Italian University Rectors (CRUI), the National Council of University Students (CNSU), and the National Association of Italian Municipalities (ANCI), Zito requested that the government and Parliament simplify existing procedures. He proposed establishing an extraordinary registration window for the first year of the law’s application, potentially allowing applications up to 45 days before an election.
The mayor warned that without a robust national information campaign and streamlined processes, the right to vote for hundreds of thousands of citizens may remain purely theoretical. In Calabria alone, an estimated 250,000 to 300,000 residents live outside their home region, contributing to high rates of voter abstention.
