Mexico tourism sees shifts in airline routes and connectivity
The Mexican aviation sector is experiencing significant changes in connectivity. Viva Aerobus has inaugurated a new direct route between Cancun and Acapulco, operating on Tuesdays and Saturdays using Airbus A320 aircraft. This addition brings the total weekly frequency between the two destinations to four, including two flights with an express stop at Felipe Angeles International Airport (AIFA).
In contrast, United Airlines has announced it will cease its daily operations at the Tulum airport due to market factors. The airline will end its service between Newark and Tulum on January 2, 2027, and its Houston to Tulum route on January 4, 2027. United noted that customers can redirect bookings to Cancun or request refunds. This move follows similar reductions by Volaris, Aeromexico, and American Airlines, which officials suggest may be linked to decreased demand, sargassum presence, and local management issues.
Meanwhile, Condor has launched its third season of direct flights between Frankfurt and Los Cabos. The German airline will operate twice weekly until March 2027, targeting European tourists from Germany, Austria, and the Netherlands.
