Vivek Ramaswamy and Amy Acton debate Ohio tax policies
Republican gubernatorial nominee Vivek Ramaswamy and Democratic nominee Amy Acton are facing scrutiny over competing tax reform proposals in Ohio. Ramaswamy has pledged to reset the property tax baseline to pre-pandemic levels, a move he describes as the most significant property tax cut in state history. He also expressed support for transitioning school funding away from a heavy reliance on local property taxes toward other statewide revenue sources.
Critics, including local officials in Ironton, argue that Ramaswamy’s plan to roll back property taxes and eliminate income taxes could create a $24 billion budget deficit. Opponents suggest this shortfall might necessitate significant increases in sales and income taxes or lead to cuts in Medicaid and funding for local governments, fire departments, and school districts.
While both candidates agree that property tax relief is necessary, they differ on implementation. Ramaswamy’s platform also includes a recent 90-day gas tax holiday, funded by the state’s General Revenue Fund surplus.
