Ohio gubernatorial race faces controversy over Ramaswamy attack ad

Republican candidate Vivek Ramaswamy is facing intense bipartisan backlash following the release of a campaign advertisement featuring Donna Arthur, the estranged mother of Democratic opponent Amy Acton. In the ad, Arthur calls Acton a “liar” and urges voters not to support her. The advertisement has drawn condemnation from various political figures, including Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, who described the tactic as “deeply troubling.”

The controversy centers on the personal history of the candidates. Acton has stated that she and her brother endured extreme child abuse and neglect, alleging that her stepfather molested her between the ages of 9 and 12. While the advertisement disputes Acton's accounts of her childhood, it does not explicitly mention the allegations of sexual abuse. Acton noted she has not seen her mother since she was 12 years old.

Despite the criticism, President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance have defended the campaign strategy. Ramaswamy has committed to spending $4 million to continue promoting the ad. The political fallout has included the loss of an endorsement from The Plain Dealer and the cancellation of several scheduled campaign events at venues in Delaware and Newark, Ohio.
