Vivek Ramaswamy defends controversial Ohio campaign ad

Republican gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy is facing intense backlash and internal party division over a campaign advertisement featuring Donna Arthur, the estranged mother of his Democratic opponent, Dr. Amy Acton. The 60-second spot depicts Arthur calling Acton a “liar” regarding her past, specifically disputing Acton’s accounts of childhood homelessness and living in a tent.

Acton, Ohio’s former state health director, has been estranged from Arthur since 1978, when Acton was removed from her mother’s custody following the indictment of her stepfather for the sexual abuse of Acton. While the ad focuses on claims of dishonesty, critics argue it exploits personal trauma and ignores the context of the family's history.

The advertisement has drawn significant reactions from high-profile Republicans. Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and former Governor Bob Taft have both criticized the ad, with DeWine calling for its removal. Conversely, President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance have defended the tactic, with Trump describing the ad as “hitting pay dirt.”

Recent political analysis from the Cook Political Report has shifted the race from a “Toss Up” to “Lean Democrat,” citing the fallout from the advertisement. Additionally, campaign finance reports indicate that while Ramaswamy has spent significant funds on media, his campaign carries a substantial debt.
