Vivida bkk and BKK Scheufelen cancel planned merger
Vivida bkk and BKK Scheufelen have abandoned their plans to merge, which was originally scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2027. The two company health insurance funds announced on October 12, 2026, that during the preparation phase, they determined that the expected benefits of the merger could not be sufficiently realized.
Both organizations will remain independent, and no immediate changes are required for their insured members. This marks the second failed merger of the year, following the cancellation of a merger between BIG direkt gesund and Salus BKK in May.
The decision comes amid political pressure to consolidate Germany's statutory health insurance sector. Federal Health Minister Carsten Linnemann has advocated for reducing the number of health insurance funds from the current 92 to a low double-digit figure to improve financial stability. While some funds continue to seek partners—such as BKK Firmus with Heimat Krankenkasse and BKK Pfalz with mkk—the recent cancellation highlights the challenges of achieving economic and organizational synergy through consolidation.
