Vivo tests direct Starlink satellite connectivity for smartphones in Brazil
Vivo is advancing tests in Brazil for Direct-to-Device (D2D) technology, which would allow smartphones to connect directly to Starlink satellites without the need for a traditional satellite dish. This service aims to provide connectivity in remote areas where 4G or 5G coverage is unavailable, acting as a complement to existing terrestrial networks rather than a replacement.
Telefônica Brasil, the parent company of Vivo, has received authorization from Anatel to conduct these tests. Recent observations of a “Vivo Starlink” network on smartphone devices suggest that the partnership between Vivo and SpaceX's Starlink is progressing toward a potential strategic service.
