VIX volatility rises as AI investment risks overshadow interest rate concerns

The VIX volatility index rose to 18 as market participants shifted their focus from interest rate concerns to the risks associated with artificial intelligence (AI) investments and technology stocks. While the Federal Reserve's interest rate decisions remain a factor, traders are increasingly prioritizing the speed and scale at which AI investments translate into actual corporate profits.

Options trading volume for the VIX has exceeded twice its 30-day average, with significant activity in call options. This trend reflects a growing caution regarding semiconductor and data center stocks, which have recently pressured the S&P 500. Despite high volatility in the bond market, as indicated by the MOVE index, the equity market's immediate concerns are centered on tech sector valuations.

Some investors are adjusting their portfolio designs by reducing highly concentrated AI positions in favor of broader diversification to protect gains. While individual tech stocks like NVIDIA, Intel, and Micron Technology have shown significant performance, the broader options market has at times signaled more muted expected fluctuations compared to long-term averages.
