Vizhinjam International Seaport begins full EXIM operations
Vizhinjam International Seaport in Kerala has officially commenced full-scale export-import (EXIM) operations. This transition from a transshipment hub to a direct gateway for Indian trade aims to reduce reliance on foreign ports for container transshipment.
Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ) announced a Phase 2 expansion involving an additional investment of Rs 16,000 crore, bringing the group’s total investment in the project to approximately Rs 30,000 crore. This expansion is expected to increase the port’s annual capacity from 1.6 million TEUs to 5.7 million TEUs by December 2028. The project will include new container berths, rail and road connectivity, and logistics facilities, with the potential to create over 5,000 jobs.
Kerala Chief Minister VD Satheesan highlighted the port as a vital gateway for the state’s growth. Under the ‘Mission Samudra’ initiative, the government aims to shift 50% to 60% of the state's freight to sea routes. The port is also intended to be India’s first fully automated facility utilizing artificial intelligence. Since beginning commercial operations in late 2024, the port has already handled over 2.28 million TEUs and approximately 1,100 vessels.
