Vizhinjam International Seaport launches EXIM cargo operations on Aug 18

The Vizhinjam International Seaport in Kerala will begin full‑scale export‑import (EXIM) cargo operations on 18 August 2026, shifting from its earlier role as a pure transshipment hub to a gateway for India’s overseas trade. Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan will inaugurate the launch, marking a milestone for the region’s largest infrastructure project.

The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs has granted final clearance, imposing phased restrictions until a Container Freight Station becomes operational. Imports will be limited to full‑container‑load (FCL) shipments delivered directly to importers within 48 hours, while exports will be confined to factory‑stuffed, self‑sealed or customs‑sealed FCL containers entered directly at the port. Road transshipment to inland container depots, special economic zones and other customs stations will also commence, all under existing sea cargo manifest and transhipment regulations.
