Vizhinjam International Seaport to begin direct EXIM cargo operations

Direct export-import (EXIM) cargo operations are scheduled to commence at the Vizhinjam International Seaport in Kerala starting August 18. This transition marks a significant shift for the port, which has previously functioned primarily as an international transshipment hub where approximately 60 percent of handled containers were destined for or originating from other countries.

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor welcomed the development, noting that the move will allow Kerala to derive direct economic benefits from the international port. Kerala Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan is expected to formally inaugurate the EXIM operations.

As one of India’s deepest water ports, the facility is expected to strengthen the state’s position in the global maritime logistics network by providing local businesses with better access to international shipping services. The operational framework for the new gateway cargo service will be implemented in phases, with initial import operations focusing on direct port delivery of full-container-load cargo, while exports will include factory-stuffed and sealed full-container-load consignments.
