Vizhunthamavadi village bans alcohol for unmarried youth
The fishing village of Vizhunthamavadi in the Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu has implemented a local ban on alcohol consumption for unmarried young men. The resolution, passed by the village panchayat and supported by approximately 200 families, has been in effect since August 2.
Under the new rules, unmarried youth found consuming alcohol within village limits face a fine of Rs 5,000. Married men are also subject to the same penalty if they cause public disturbances or engage in heated arguments with family members while under the influence. To encourage compliance, the panchayat has announced a Rs 2,000 incentive for individuals who provide evidence of violations to village leaders.
Community members cited several reasons for the measure, including the prevention of addiction, the reduction of family disputes, and the mitigation of public nuisances. Residents noted that alcohol-related issues had created an unsafe atmosphere for women and children and contributed to local accidents. The initiative is being promoted through digital banners and public announcements to encourage a safer community environment.
