VKI and ANEC warn of dangerous baby products
The Association for Consumer Information (VKI) and the European consumer protection organization ANEC have issued warnings regarding several categories of baby products deemed unnecessary and potentially hazardous. The identified risks include suffocation, strangulation, and drowning.
Among the ten criticized product groups are self-feeding pillows, which pose a suffocation risk if milk continues to flow when a baby is not swallowing, and neck swim rings, which can lead to drowning or neck injuries. Other high-risk items include baby bath seats, which may tip over, and sleep positioners that can obstruct breathing if a child shifts position.
Additionally, weighted sleeping bags and swaddle sacks (pucksäcke) are flagged for their potential to impair breathing and heart function. While the VKI noted that some medical positioning aids are necessary under professional guidance, many consumer products intended for convenience present significant safety threats.
