VKIST to receive $30 million in South Korean aid for strategic R&D
The second phase of the Vietnam-Korea Institute of Science and Technology (VKIST) project is expected to run from 2026 to 2033, supported by $30 million in non-refundable aid from South Korea. The project aims to focus on strategic technology research, human resource training, and the transfer and commercialization of technology.
During a working visit to the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) in South Korea, Vietnam's Minister of Science and Technology, Vu Hai Quan, proposed four key areas for cooperation: joint research in strategic fields such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence (AI), batteries and energy storage, advanced materials, and biotechnology; the establishment of shared R&D infrastructure and modern equipment; human resource development through direct work placements and long-term master's and doctoral training via KIST School; and the promotion of the VKIST R&D project for the 2026–2033 period.
KIST President Oh Sang Rok committed to supporting the project to ensure it becomes a core R&D hub connecting research institutes and businesses in both nations. The second phase will include 38 joint R&D topics, technology commercialization, and the development of research infrastructure for semiconductors and secondary batteries.
